Community based rehabilitation

Location:

Zipolite, Oaxaca, Mexico

Partner organization: Piña Palmera is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which has tackled the issues of physical- and /or mental disabilities of persons from rural communities for more than 25 years.

Project description: People with disabilities should be able to remain in their trusted environments and be treated locally wherever and whenever possible. The basic idea to which the program is geared is to increase the instances of successful rehabilitation of such persons through the recruitment, training and supervision of local rehabilitation leaders. In this way it is not only possible to treat almost everyone suffering from a disability, but also to reduce the costs of rehabilitation. Most of the promoters work on a voluntary basis and, more importantly, the integration of people with handicaps is perceived as a shared responsibility involving the entire community.

Contribution apia: apia supports the activities of the center with a yearly contribution.

Project coordinator: Louis Gschwend
